ok - so this week is pretty easy.
i've never really been a brandy fan. in fact, her whispy little voice has always kinda annoyed me. sometime this past year, i stumbled upon the title track from brandy's album Afrodisiac and became obsessed. i don't know what it is about that song that gets me going, but i was in total love. so someone tells me that brandy has a new single out, and i see it on itunes, so i decide to buy it. and. i love it. i mean, it's in super-heavy awesome roation right now. the song's called Right Here (Departed).

anywho. something about the beat. something about the whole darkchild sound is really hot to me. in fact, i'm just thinking about some other darkchild productions - say my name maybe? i know there's others that i have loved. good combo brandy. love it
so, there is another right now. i can't decide if it's gonna peter out after this week or not, but Kids by MGMT it such a great song.

if you know me at all, you know i have a special place in my heart for electronic/electronica/elctro whatever you wanna call it music. the more synthesized it is, usually, the more i like it. i have to admit, i haven't been too keen on other MGMT songs - which surprised me - but this one is great. it is a LITTLE repetitive, which will probably knock it outta my heavy rotation list after a short time, but it's still freakin' great.
so - good music news of the week - Depeche Mode is putting out a new album this SPRING!
if you know me, you know that anything dm is good by me. i'm so excited for the new album, but even more excited about the tour - can't wait to see them again! in fact, the last time i saw them was when i lived in las vegas - three years ago now? todd and i drove down to phoenix for the concert - hope they come here again!
in bad music news - i've heard a nasty rumor that the Postal Service is in actuality NOT working on a new album. stupid ben gibbard. death cab is not NEARLY as good as postal service. NOT NEARLY. way to shatter my dreams. i have seriously been looking forward to new postal service for like 4 years - pretty much since i got my hands on the first album... and now, it will never be. unless we all boycott death cab. i'm in.
hasta!

Again - last week got away from me...
OK - my DEFINITIVE obsession of last week... The Soundtrack to Slumdog Millionaire...

so the movie was really great - i liked it like i loved Waitress. i felt good about life in general after seeing this movie. and the soundtrack is the same. i don't know what any of the lyrics mean, but i can still get down to it... especially O... Saya - i've had that song on repeat a little too long... but i can't stop!
Check it out!

so i love the "smart playlist" on itunes. i mean. i use it WAY too much. i think i have 25 different playlists right now. it all depends on the mood i'm in i guess..
anyhoo.
as i did last year, i ran a playlist of the top songs that came out in 2008 - by number of times i played them and by rating - yes i rate my itunes music... makes it easier to be sure i don't hear anything i hate...
so.
here are the top 10 songs played on my ipod in 2008 that were released in 2008:
1. I'm Yours - Jason Mraz 2. L.E.S. Artistes - Santogold 3. Dance 2night - Madonna 4. Why Do You Let Me Stay Here - She & Him 5. Devil Wouldn't Recognize You - Madonna 6. Viva La Vida - Coldplay 7. Juliet of the Spirits - The B_52's 8. Funplex - The B-52's 9. Luv - Janet Jackson 10. I Don't Care - Fall Out Boy
my fave album of 2008 was the B-52's Album Funplex (followed up by Hard Candy from Madonna). i have to admit to being a little disappointed with the DCFC album. overall? blah.

Ok - christmas is over, so my musical obsessions will move away from holiday music. it's kind of rough, considering that i haven't listened to anything BUT holiday music since the day after thanksgiving - and now to just go cold turkey... it hurts my head a bit...
so i didn't even think i would stumble upon something good this week, and then i came accross this:
Never Miss A Beat by Kaiser Chiefs.
hooray! fun alterna-dance music. if only the song was synthesized within an inch of its life - then it would be perfect.
check it out - from the album Off With Their Heads

Once again, this week's musical obsession comes from my Holiday playlist...
I have always loved the Carpenters... but something about the Carpenters' Christmas music is particularly nostalgic to me... especially... Merry Christmas Baby. It's been in heavy rotation recently... And ya know, I don't think it's been covered (successfully) by anyone - thankfully...

In other news - I thought it would be interesting to see what the top 10 Christmas Songs I've been listening to are... Here they are:
10. Let's Be Naughty - Elliott Yamin 9. A Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives 8. Sleigh Ride - Andy Williams 7. The Secret of Christmas - Ella Fitzgerald 6. Celebrate the Season With Chubbs - From the Wonder Twins Christmas Album Stuff Your Stocking 5. Carol of the Bells - From the Wonder Twins Christmas Album Lump of Coal 4. Christmas Lullaby - From Songs for a New World 3. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Aimee Mann 2. Mistletoe and Holly - Frank Sinatra 1. Santariffic - Harry Connick, Jr.
For those of you wondering, the Wonder Twins Christmas Albums are homemade CD's from friends Scott and Clare - not available on iTunes... ;)
Off to Chicago on Monday. Three more days of caroling.
Merry Christmas!

4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. NO GOOGLING/using IMDB search functions. Or checking my favorite movies on my Facebook!! That's cheating and it ruins the fun.

yes. i watched it.
and i think i liked it.
ok... here goes...
things i liked:
the general feel of the show was spot on. kinda corny, kinda over-dramatic, kinda good. it was nice to see kelly and brenda friends again. the drunk grandma is fun. the characters are all good (for a teen dramedy). the rich actor, the black jock, the white jock, the av nerd, the good girl, the bad girl, the pill-poppin' bitch, and the regular bitch. it got right to it. the guy who plays the teacher/lacrosse coach. fun and yum. awww. the pit's still there. spring awakening is their musical? um. right. but good choice!
things i want to complain about:
since when did kelly have brandon's baby. did i miss something? i know i didn't watch the last season faithfully, but i don't remember that. um - brenda and kelly are guest stars. they just used them to get us into the show - and then they'll ditch them again. the writing is NOT SO GOOD. at all. but i'll give it another chance. why must everyone sing? where's the gays? was rob estes ever on 90210 back in the day. i think not. don't try to insert him into my 90210-memories. the drunk grandma is too campy. WAY too campy. um - is that teacher/coach guy the only teacher at the school? sure seems like it. make joe e tata go away.
that's my schtick.
so - i love tv. i mean - i majored in it in college... so as new show's come out, i'll be writing about them.
next up? tonight is America's Next Top Model - and Tyra finally did it - here comes the Trannies!
hasta.

OK. so it's been a while again.
catching you up:
sister came - we went to the grand canyon - we all got really sunburned and almost didn't make it outta the canyon like a bunch of freakin' touristas. all in all good. it rained at night a lot so we never had a campfire. sucky. we left a day early cuz someone had a tantrum. not me. not my sister. like i said, overall good.
sister left.
sister came back with other sister, niece, mother, and friend of first sister. sisters auditioned for american idol. you won't be seeing them on the show, but they were good. had a good time with all. fun fun fun.
looking for a house. made on offer on the best house ever. unfortunately, so did two other people. so - best house ever is gone. not officially, but nonetheless.
work is crazy. going to camp this weekend. engineering camp with a bunch of engineering freshmen. it should be fun. i think. i'll let you know.
got really drunk with one of the gaylords on sunday night. (gaylord = gay landlord). he also happens to be our real estate agent, so he came over to fill out our offer, stayed to finish off the bottle of gin. YAY - we've officially made a friend in phoenix. he's way cool. feel bad cuz his partner is leaving to teach in louisiana on friday. ick.
um. what else. i think i'm getting a raise. it's kinda hush hush. but i think it's going to happen. more to come once it actually happens.
um. i got approved to go to chicago for the nacada conference. will be in burbia september 27th, 28th, and 29th. will be in city proper spetember 30th, october 1st, 2nd, 3rd, back in burbia for the 4th, leave on the 5th. aiight?
that's all for now.
hasta.

it was a strange one, and i want to get it down before i forget.
ok. so i was in a movie with robert downey jr. - "chris" in the movie, the blond chick who played cece on the nanny, a black chick i can't remember, a chick who looked like mary lou retton but wasn't, and some other guy who i can't remember - we were the main cast. other supporting characters were adam, niko, tammy, dominic, and yet another "chris" - more on him later.
so rdj was the main character - the center of our large circle of friends, and he royally pissed us all off, and the bulk of the movie was how he was getting back in our good graces. we all started to drift apart, and his reconnection brought us all back together. *ugh* so he bought cece these really nice antiques - some figurines by "chris novak" - in my dream - a famous figurine designer apparently, and he got the black chick a dog (cuz she was scared of living alone so she shacked up with some guy who had a kid, and then he left her and left her with the kid - and she'd been beaten down and he was empowering her - by buying her a dog), and he bought the white guy i can't remember a segway - cuz he was a messenger in san francisco (the movie was set there) but he wanted to be more - so the segway brought him to the next level - and he wore a suit when he made his deliveries. and i don't remember what rdj did for me, but i was instantly not mad at him anymore, so it must have been good.
ok so everyone gets back in sync with one another except the mary lou retton girl, and as he's going to find her in her apartment, the music is rising, and then - the credits role. and i was like. wtf? and then, we're right back into the movie. ok. so for SOME REASON, he decides that he and i are going to escort her to this party - this party in a big fancy loft thingy that's all vietnamese people. and now mary lou is vietnamese herself. so we get there, and the host is like, um, ok, um, they're coming? um. ok. but they're not vietnamese. um. ok. so we have to climb the stairs, but they aren't regular stairs, they're vietnamese stairs.
now. what is a vietnamese stair? no idea. but in my dream, it means there's a handrail and the actual stair is only one inch deep, so you have to climb on your tippy toes. and, there's noodles on the stairs that you have to scrape with the tip of your shoe and bring with you as you ascend. i don't know. this was a really weird part.
so we go in and we start having a good time - i don't know what we were doing, i just remember dream-thinking, ooo, this is fun! and then it changes from a vietnamese party to a huge dinner party with hundreds of guests. so we're at the table, and everyone leaves to go dance and i realize there's just me and this guy at the table - the other "chris". and he's good-looking, and charming, and it's making me all giddy. and we chat, and then i find out that he owns the whole building of flats that we're partying in, and his theme is that he wants to make it a place where you can go with a group of friends for dinner, and you get your own little studio to have your dinner party in. and it's a cool concept, and this guy must have money out the a$$ but i'm not really focused on that so much as on his smile and his perfect teeth. and for some reason, all i can think about is how this is the type of guy that would hit on dominic and not me. and then i flash back (in movie style) to like fifty times in the past when i was talking to a guy and he would just lose interest as soon as he saw dominic. it's a sad state of affairs when you dream that kind of shit, let me tell ya.
so then we have to part ways, as he has to go attend to some things at this huge party, and i go up to the roof to see adam and niko, and that's where tammy is, and they're all looking amazing. and then we're sitting on some balcony thing and chris comes back, but now he's with a bunch of people, and they look like his parents. but now, he's changed from a white hot guy, to a hispanic hot guy. and his family around him look like they were doing the cooking for dinner that night. and i'm like come sit by me, but he can't cuz he's with everyone, but he'll come sit in the row behind me - (maybe we were watching a sporting event - maybe a swim meet?) but the family decides they don't want to stay so they leave. BUT, i'm not gonna let that happen - so, i catch up with him while he's in the lobby waiting for his car to be brought up by valet, and i say, i'm going to be direct, here's my number, i want you to use it. and he says "i will". mmmm.
so then he has to leave, and i take the strange elevator - i say strange cuz it was like slanted. like the roof was at the top of the eiffel tower and i'm slowly climbing at an angle along one of the legs - in fact, i actually made that analogy in my dream. we might've even been on a paris rooftop when we got to the top. i can't recall. but then i'm up there, and everyone is going home and it's dark, and i turn around, and there's chris, and he says "well, i couldn't just leave" and he's walking towards me, and then the alarm goes off.
the frackin' alarm. i hate it. i desperately tried to get back to the dream, but it was no use. and so, i woke up and began my day with this REALLY vivid dream stuck in my head. it kind of reminds me of the dream i had with luca from er - very vivid, very sort of romantic comedy-esque. or the dream i had where i was a spy for japan and got caught in korea, and the crazy korean general shot me in the head and i died. another very vivid dream.
the thing i dont' like about these dreams is they leave a heavy emotional imprint on me for the rest of the day, and i almost think back to them as if they were memories, vividly recalling the emotion that went along with their plot. i can recall their associated emotions in the same way i can recall the emotion at my grandmother's funeral, or the exact minute she died, or the emotion when i was SO bad at karaoke that one time that the dj actually stopped the song in the middle - one of the most embarassing moments in my life...
aaaaaanyways..
that's enough of that. i must know deal with students. blah blah blah.

you've heard of mormons. there's a ton in arizona.
sidebar - i had never met a mormon until i moved to arizona and started working at asu. now, they're everywhere. they're taking over! and they don't seem the least bit cultish, mom!
back to the topic at hand - there's a ton of mormons around. i was recently speaking with g-frita and we both realized that we are in love with the same man. his name is mark, and he's on sytycd and he is my husband.
then i find out that he is also g-frita's husband. wtf!?! and then i realized, i am now mormonesque. fortunately, i won't be having any children that can be taken away by the state of texas, but, i am still "married" to a man who's already married. g-frita and i decided that we would not be mormons - cuz they hate the mo's - instead, we would be whormons.
our religion? marry who you want, sleep with who you want, enjoy. oh. sleep in on sundays. church is overrated. oh yeah, chocolate is your new god. um. i think that's it.
welcome to the new world order. whormons. we're everywhere!

and so.
todd and i attended another concert last week. just three short days after george wowed us, we went to the True Colors Tour. the Puppini Sisters opened the show - a girl trio that sings covers of pops songs in the style of the andrews sisters. overall they were good. let's see, then was wanda sykes. that's a funny bitch right there. following her was andy bell of erasure. that's an ugly dude right there. after him was joan jett and the blackhearts, then the b-52's, then cyndi lauper. oh - and carson from queer eye was the host. and was actually funny.
so here's how it all breaks down.
puppini sisters - good. fun. entertaining. i like their covers as novelties. they are obviously very talented ladies. 4 out of 5.
wanda sykes - amazing. is she gay? i can't tell. she gives me lesbionic occasionally. but she was really funny. 5 out of 5
andy bell - this dude is ugly. i mean ugly. he can still sing great, i have to say, but he only sang like two old erasure songs. nobody buys his new stuff. well some people do, but i don't, and i'm the one that counts. oh - and all the new stuff sounds exactly the same. oh - and he doesn't have a band, so it' just him in tight leather pants running (prancing?) around the stage to a cd. andy. ANDY! he was a little disappointing, but i did dig the old erasure tunes. 2.5 out of 5.
joan jett and the blackhearts - this bitch can still rock. but here's the thing. once she sang the songs i knew - crimson and clover, hate myself for loving you, um - there was like two others maybe that i can't think of right now... i was done. she looks great, she sounds great, i'm over it. sing your hits and leave the stage. 3 out of 5.
the B-52's - fracking amazing! i danced my ass off during their show. they sang old songs (love shack, roam, your own private idaho, rock lobster) and then new stuff (funplex, juliet of the spirits, opened with pump) they were great. cindy and kate can still sing like crazy bitches, and my keith (he's the guitarist) still looks hot, hot, hot. they were amazing to me. i could've left when they were done. cyndi is great and all, but these guys blew me away. 5 out of 5
cyndi lauper - still sounds amazing. but i just don't like most of her music. i have to say i was super happy she sang i drove all night. that's one of her best covers ever. or did she do it originally? i can't remember. it was either her or roy orbison. anyhoo, she sounds great, she looks great, but i can't listen to her talk for too long. cuz then she sounds stupid. but when she was done, i was all too happy, mostly because i was D-R-U-N-K and tired (we'd been there for like 5 hours - geesh). i'd give her a 3.5 out of 5.
so - what does that add up to... 23 out of 30? ooo. that's not great. overall, a good time. but individually - eh. id' take wanda sykes opening for the b-52's - and that's it - any day.
ok. that's it for today.

sunday, todd and i went VERY GAYLY forward to see mr. george michael. i have to say i was super excited to go; i had never seen him before, but had wanted to for so long... i remember getting listen without prejudice - my first george michael album. yes, i knew his earlier stuff, but that was the first album i actually purchased. i used to listen to it over and over and over - i was in sixth grade i think. freedom 90, of course, was the best song on the album, but the whole album was perfect. i remember when he had the no. 1 song on casey's top 40. my sister and i used to listen to it every sunday on the way home from church - my family would stop for sunday dinner at some restaurant - always around number 2 or something - and my sister and i would wait in the car to hear who was number one. ahh... the good old days.
anyhoo, so the concert opened with him singing the waiting reprise on listen without prejudice. it's the last song on the album, and brings it to a nice close with some pretty personal lyrics for george. it was SO amazing to have him start with that song. it was a way of saying, here i am (the last three words of that song) and he freakin' belted the crap outta it. and then right into fastlove. this song was the anthem for cammy, ellie, elsa and i during my first summer at college. we listened to a lot of george michael and roxette that summer. i remember driving around a lot to fastlove. so it was really nice to have that kind of kick things off. that was also the summer that we used to get really drunk and do floor shows to hard day - another favorite george michael show. i was so hoping he would play this - but wasn't sure he would as it isn't one of the most popular. he did. and it was - amazing. in fact, every song on my list was performed - kissing a fool even - i mean - FREAKIN' KISSING A FOOL. there were only two songs that i thought we would hear that weren't performed - monkey and i want your sex. monkey's absence didn't shock me - i'm sure he's over that song - but i was surprised that i want your sex was not on the set list. estrange.
another nice thing - it was him and backup singers - and the band of course - but that's it. no dancers - no floor show. just a great singer performing his a$$ off. he came out for two - or three? - encores, and when he came out the last time, he said, ok this is the last song, so what should it be, and the WHOLE ARENA said FREEDOM. of course, he knew it was coming. i think freedom might be his most-recognizable song - well maybe faith. (he played that, too) he even sang careless whisper, everything she wants, no wake me up before you go-go (thank god).
anyhoo. it was an amazing show. there aren't many greats - i'd say he's one of the best male singers in the world, and he's still got it. i will admit to tearing up at one point. truly amazing (he played that too!).
